Payne has made heating equipment since 1914 and today sits beside Carrier and Bryant in the same company, as the plain, budget-friendly option. Payne systems are simple and compact, which suits the older cottages and smaller houses of Tiburon, Belvedere and Mill Valley, where the equipment often sits in a tight closet, a garage or a crawlspace. We are an independent company, not affiliated with Payne or Carrier, and we repair, maintain and replace Payne systems at a price set before the work.
Reading a Payne model number
The letters at the start of the model number on the data plate tell you what you have:
- PA: a split-system air conditioner.
- PH: a split-system heat pump, which heats and cools.
- PG: a gas furnace.
Give us the full model number when you call, and the technician arrives with a good idea of the parts the unit takes.
Repairs we make most on Payne equipment
PG furnaces. A cracked hot surface igniter or a dirty flame sensor causes the classic pattern: the inducer starts, the burners light, then shut off a few seconds later. High-efficiency models add a condensate trap and drain that can clog and trip the pressure switch. A worn inducer motor usually whines for weeks before it stops, so a new noise at start-up is worth a call.
PA air conditioners. Run capacitors, contactors and outdoor fan motors account for most no-cooling calls. Coils near the water corrode and crust with salt; coils under Mill Valley trees pack with leaves and needles.
PH heat pumps. Defrost sensors and controls, reversing valves and slow refrigerant leaks. A heat pump that blows cool air in heating mode on a cold morning needs a look; running it that way for days wastes energy and can hide a bigger fault.
Working in tight spaces
A furnace squeezed into a hall closet or a low crawlspace is harder to service than one in an open garage, and that is where shortcuts happen. We pull the filter and check the return path, confirm the vent and combustion air are clear, and look at gas connections and wiring that have been out of sight for years. Small spaces also hide water damage from a leaking condensate line, so we check under and around the unit.
Fix it or replace it?
Because Payne equipment is simple, most single-part failures are quick, worthwhile repairs. The picture changes when:
- the furnace heat exchanger is cracked, which is a safety issue and almost always means replacement;
- an air conditioner or heat pump still uses R-22, which is no longer produced, and needs refrigerant work;
- the system has needed repeated repairs over a few seasons;
- you want quieter or more efficient equipment than Payne’s simple lineup offers.
We show both options and prices before work starts. Replacement options include furnace installation and heat pump installation, and financing is available with approved credit.
Shared parts in the Carrier family
Payne, Bryant and Carrier share many components, which helps when a part is needed quickly. We still match every part to your model number. Repairs carry our 90-day warranty, and parts carry the manufacturer’s warranty. For a general picture of a repair visit, see furnace repair and AC repair.
