The company Edwin Ruud founded in 1897 began with water heaters and grew into a full heating and cooling line. Ruud is now part of Rheem, and the two brands’ equipment is closely related, though each is sold through its own contractors. In Tiburon, Belvedere and Mill Valley we repair, maintain and replace Ruud air conditioners, heat pumps and gas furnaces, independent of both brands and with the price set before work begins.
Endeavor, Ultra, Achiever Plus and Achiever
The Endeavor Line is Ruud’s newer generation of equipment. Across it, the tiers are familiar:
- Ultra Series at the top, with variable-speed and modulating equipment.
- Achiever Plus in the middle, with staged and higher-efficiency models.
- Achiever as the dependable entry line.
Older Ruud systems that predate the Endeavor name use the same tier names, so an Achiever Plus heat pump from either generation tells us roughly what is inside before we open a panel.
The scroll compressor is rarely the first thing to fail
Ruud’s air conditioners and heat pumps use scroll compressors, which have few moving parts and run quietly. When an outdoor unit will not start, the compressor gets blamed first, but it is seldom the cause. Our order of testing:
- Power and controls. The disconnect, fuses, the thermostat call and the contactor that switches the outdoor unit on.
- The run capacitor. A weak capacitor makes the compressor hum, trip on overload and stop.
- Heat and airflow. A coil packed with salt or leaves makes the compressor run hot until its internal overload opens. It restarts once it cools, which looks like random shutdowns.
- Windings and refrigerant. Only after the first three do we measure the compressor windings and the charge.
A compressor that has truly failed on an older system usually leads to a replacement conversation; on a newer one, the manufacturer’s warranty may cover the part.
Weather-resistant finish, exposed parts
Ruud cabinets have a weather-resistant finish, but the coil and the electrical parts inside are still exposed to the air. On the Tiburon peninsula and Belvedere waterfront, corroded contactor terminals and capacitor leads cause hard starts long before the cabinet looks bad. A yearly cleaning of the coil and connections during AC maintenance prevents most of that.
Heat pumps on cool, damp mornings
Ruud heat pumps run a defrost cycle when frost builds on the outdoor coil, which can happen on cold, humid mornings even when the air is above freezing. A short burst of steam and a pause in heating is normal. A coil that stays white, or heat that never comes back, points to a defrost sensor, the defrost control or low charge. See heat pump repair.
EcoNet on Ruud equipment
Compatible Ruud systems work with the EcoNet smart thermostat and app, which show alerts and run staged or variable-speed equipment the way it was designed to run. A generic thermostat can limit a variable-speed system, so check with us before replacing the control.
Furnaces
Ruud gas furnaces see the usual heating-season faults: igniters, flame sensors, pressure switches and condensate traps on high-efficiency models. Our furnace repair and AC repair visits cover them, and every repair carries a 90-day warranty, with parts under the manufacturer’s warranty.
