Trane began as James Trane’s plumbing and heating business in Wisconsin in 1885, and today its residential line covers air conditioners, heat pumps, furnaces, air handlers and whole-home air cleaners. In Tiburon, Belvedere and Mill Valley we repair, maintain and replace Trane equipment across the XV, XR and XB lines. XV, XR and XB
- XV is the top line, with TruComfort variable-speed equipment and ComfortLink II communicating controls.
- XR is the middle of the range, with single- and two-stage models.
- XB is the entry line: single-stage equipment on conventional thermostats.

Spine Fin coils near salt water
Many Trane outdoor units use the Spine Fin coil: aluminum tubes wrapped in thin aluminum spines instead of flat fins on copper tubing. Two things follow for a house near the bay:
- Cleaning is different. The spines bend and hold debris differently from flat fins, so we clean them with low-pressure water and a cleaner suited to aluminum, never a pressure washer.
- Leak repair is different. Aluminum is harder to repair than copper, so a leak in the coil often turns into a repair-or-replace decision on the coil itself. We find the leak first, show you where it is, and price both options.
Salt still reaches the cabinet fasteners, the fan motor and the electrical terminals, so the yearly check covers those too.
ComfortLink II and TruComfort
ComfortLink II links the thermostat, the indoor unit and the outdoor unit over a communication wire, so the system configures itself and reports faults in plain terms on the control. TruComfort variable-speed equipment adjusts in small steps and runs long at low speed. For service that means:
- The control’s alert history is the first stop, especially for problems that come and go.
- A loose or damaged communication wire produces errors that look like failed boards, so the wiring gets tested before any board is ordered.
- A third-party thermostat usually cannot drive TruComfort equipment at full capability, so we replace the control like for like.
CleanEffects air cleaners
CleanEffects is Trane’s whole-home electronic air cleaner, installed in the ductwork at the furnace or air handler. Its collection cells need regular washing. When they load up, cleaning performance drops and you may hear snapping or ticking from the cabinet. On smoky days, when windows stay shut, a clean unit does real work for the air indoors. What fails most on Trane systems
Furnaces: igniters, flame sensors, inducer motors and pressure switches. Outdoor units: capacitors and contactors on XB and XR models; sensors and drive components on XV systems; coil leaks and corrosion on units near the water.
