Coleman HVAC Service in Tiburon & Mill Valley

Coleman furnaces, air conditioners and heat pumps are made by Johnson Controls, the company behind York, so they share much of York's engineering and parts.

The Coleman name on a furnace or outdoor unit in Tiburon, Belvedere or Mill Valley is a Johnson Controls brand, separate from the camping-gear company and built alongside York equipment. We repair, maintain and replace Coleman systems as an independent company with no tie to Johnson Controls, and the price comes before any work.

Echelon, LX and the TC condensers

Echelon is Coleman’s upper line, reaching from single-stage models up to variable-capacity equipment with communicating controls. LX Series is the core range, and the TC condensers you see in many side yards belong to that LX lineup: single-stage air conditioners built to pair with Johnson Controls indoor coils, furnaces and air handlers.

On a repair, the series matters less than the model number on the data plate, which tells us the refrigerant, the indoor coil the unit was matched with and the parts it takes.

Salt, fog and a Coleman outdoor unit

Peninsula air carries salt, and outdoor units within sight of the water age faster. What we find:

  • White, powdery deposits on aluminum fins, and a coil that no longer sheds heat on a warm afternoon.
  • Rust at the cabinet base, screws and panel edges, worst where sprinklers or roof runoff keep the unit wet.
  • Corroded contactor and capacitor terminals, which cause hard starts and shutdowns that come and go.

You can help between visits. With the power off at the disconnect, rinse the coil gently with a garden hose a few times a year, keep plants trimmed back, and never use a pressure washer, which flattens the fins. During AC maintenance we clean the coil properly, clean and tighten the electrical connections and look for oily spots that mark a refrigerant leak.

Matching indoor and outdoor halves

Coleman condensers are designed to run with matched Johnson Controls indoor coils, furnaces and air handlers. Trouble starts when only one half is replaced: a new outdoor unit on an old, mismatched coil can run poorly and wear out sooner. When a Coleman unit needs replacing, we check what is inside the house and quote a matched system, or explain plainly what changing only the outdoor unit would mean.

Typical Coleman repairs

SymptomWhat we usually find
Outdoor unit clicks but will not startWeak capacitor or pitted contactor
Cooling fades on warm afternoonsDirty or salt-crusted coil, low airflow, or a leak
Furnace cycles off before the house warmsFlame sensor, pressure switch or high-limit trip
Water near the furnace or air handlerBlocked condensate drain or trap
Heat pump blowing cool air in heat modeReversing valve, defrost control or low charge

In Mill Valley, where homes under the trees stay cool and damp, the furnace or heat pump runs most of the year, so igniters, heat exchangers and condensate lines get a close look on every visit. On the peninsula the outdoor unit takes more of the wear.

Replacement

When a Coleman system is old, on an outdated refrigerant or failing again and again, we price a matched replacement next to the repair. See AC installation or heat pump installation, and for repairs, AC repair and heat pump repair. Our repairs carry a 90-day warranty; parts keep the manufacturer’s warranty.

Questions we hear

Is Coleman HVAC the same company as Coleman camping gear?

No. Coleman furnaces, air conditioners and heat pumps are made by Johnson Controls, which also makes York. We are independent and affiliated with neither.

Are Coleman and York parts interchangeable?

Many parts are shared because the same company builds both, but we always match parts to the model number on your unit rather than to the brand name.

How often should I rinse a Coleman condenser near the water?

A gentle hose rinse with the power off a few times a year helps, plus a professional coil cleaning and electrical check once a year.
