Goodman builds value-priced equipment with simple controls, and the calls we get about it from Tiburon, Belvedere and Mill Valley follow from that: electrical parts, coil care, heat pump defrost, and the question of whether an older unit is worth another repair. Goodman is owned by Daikin and also builds Amana equipment. We are independent of all of them and quote every job before starting.
Which Goodman do you have?
The model number on the outdoor unit’s data plate starts with the series letters:

The indoor half is usually a Goodman gas furnace or air handler, and its model number tells us the airflow and coil the outdoor unit was matched with.
A GSZ heat pump in a mild climate
Winters here are mild, so a heat pump works in its efficient range most of the year. A GSZ can replace an aging air conditioner and carry most of the heating, sometimes with the existing gas furnace kept as backup for the coldest mornings. When a GSZ stops heating, the usual suspects are:
- Defrost. On cold, damp mornings the outdoor coil frosts, and the heat pump briefly reverses to clear it. A failed defrost sensor or board leaves the coil iced and the house cool.
- Reversing valve. A stuck valve or a failed solenoid coil leaves the system cooling when it should heat.
- Refrigerant. A slow leak shows up first as weak heat on cold mornings. We find and fix leaks rather than just topping up.
- Backup heat. On air handlers with electric heat strips, a failed strip or sequencer leaves the system short on the coldest days.
Warranty on Goodman equipment
Select Goodman models carry a lifetime compressor limited warranty, and parts coverage generally depends on registration. We read the serial number and check before ordering a compressor or another major part, so you know what should come through the manufacturer. Labor is separate; our own repairs carry a 90-day warranty.
Repair or replace
Goodman parts are widely stocked, so most single-part failures are worth fixing. Replacement becomes the better conversation when:
- the system still runs on R-22, a refrigerant that is no longer produced, and needs refrigerant work;
- the compressor has failed outside warranty on a system that is already old;
- it has needed several repairs in a few seasons;
- the house has changed, for example a remodel added rooms the old system was never sized for.
We price both paths before any work begins. Replacement options include heat pump installation and AC installation, with financing available with approved credit.
Salt air, shade and coil care
Outdoor units on Belvedere and Tiburon waterfront lots should get a coil cleaning and electrical check every year, because salt deposits cut heat transfer and corrode terminals. In Mill Valley, a unit in deep shade collects leaves and needles that block airflow. Either way, a clean coil means fewer AC repair and heat pump repair calls.
